Philosophy
A Détacher is a total-look women's clothing brand defiantly untrendy, known for its sculptural dresses, innovative knits and distinctive graphic prints.
Designer Mona Kowalska was born in Poland and spent the early part of her career designing for various small labels in Italy and, briefly, running the Paris design studio of Sonia Rykiel.
With such a precise and unwavering sense of design, she eventually decided that she’d like to do her own label, founded with designer Giorgio Carta in the fall of 1994. Opening the first A Détacher space in New York City, she intended to create a place where fashion, art, objects and design could co-exist and engage in a dialogue.
Its whimsically-proportioned, expertly-colored and patterned pieces are sharply edged and architectural, proudly adult and sexy, and far from obvious.
At A Détacher, chunky knit sweaters get thin leather belts, jackets balloon at the waist, and little clusters of gathers are found in unusual spots, like armpits or hips.
A Détacher has since become a favorite of actresses such as Maggie Gyllenhaal and Julianne Moore, and has received praise from the press, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar.
