Wilkes Bashford stores, located in San Francisco and in Palo Alto, represent a unique shopping destination in California and vibrant “hearts” of their communities thanks to their charity meetings, fundraising galas, personalized customer service, passionate staff and an impeccable eye for style.
The company was founded in 1966 by the namesake fashion icon, who set the stage for men’s fashion in Northern California, a fixture on Esquire’s “International Best Dressed List” since 1972 and the first retailer to bring many top designers from Italy, including Giorgio Armani, into the United States.
Over the years, Wilkes expanded his store by adding a women’s department in 1978; plus, in 2001, he opened a Palo Alto store to cater to the Silicon Valley crowd.
In December 2009, Wilkes Bashford became part of Mitchell Group, owned by a family he knew for over 25 years through industry events and European buying trips.
In November 2012, together they unveiled the full renovations of both stores: Wilkes Palo Alto has been stunningly transformed by adding new world-class men’s and women’s designers such as Etro, Herno, Isaia, Altuzarra, Kenzo, Naeem Khan and Chie Mihara.
