Philosophy
Ann-Sofie Back is a swedish total look clothing and accessories brand for women characterized by sensual silhouette conceived in a humorous yet wearable way.
Brought up in the suburbs of Stockholm, Back studied fashion design at Beckman's College of Design before completing an MA in fashion design at London's Central Saint Martins, from which she graduated in 1998; in October 2001, she debuted her own eponymous ready-to-wear collection at the Purple institute in Paris and, in 2005, she creates Back, a secondary line with a more accessible price point.
Ann-Sofie Back concept-based collection features stylish pieces moulded from monochrome shading and masculine style with avant garde details, creative edge and limitless styling potential and a will appeal to intelligent, style conscious women who place value on the quirky and imaginative.
Her work is always a response and challenge to the world around her: her ripped, stitched, tattered and generally askew aesthetic has been inspired by burning social issues such as porn, punk, plastic surgery; at the same time her Swedish roots can’t be wholly discounted, as they seemingly have a hand in her signature clean, laser-sharp design, a simplistic, Nordic interpretation of the avant-garde, cerebral fashion.
In 1999 Ann-Sofie was picked to exhibit at the ICA in London as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Palais du Tokio in Paris and the Venice Biennale.
She was awarded the prestigious Goldbutton Award, the equivalent of the CFDA awards in Sweden and, in 2007, she was nominated for the Swiss Textile Award.
