Dior

Philosophy

The famous couture and prêt-à-porter maison Dior was founded by the designer and fashion innovator Christian Dior in 1947, on Avenue Montaigne, historical fashion house base.

Christian Dior made his debuted in 1948 with the "New Look" collection, inducing uproar and admiration with his new fashion proposal, characterized by rich provocation: Dior presents, for the first time, the famous "corolla" skirts, moreover flared skirts with voluminous wheel.

In the 50’s Dior shows hourglass shapes, bare shoulders dresses, squeezed waist, putting emphasis on décolleté.

Looking to the future, he opened a fur division.

Christian Dior conquers international press and he was the first fashion designer appearing on the “Time” cover.

He died prematurely in the same year at age 52; Dior wrote the history of fashion, as the adventurer-designer, art and architecture lover; he broke haute couture rules, transforming it.

Since 1958, famous designers were Dior creative directors: the young Yves Saint Laurent, who presented his first collection called "Ligne Trapèze", Gianfranco Ferré (1989) and John Galliano (1996), who proposes unique combinations mixing "street" fashion and Beijing’s opera style, dandy looks and outfits inspired to Amerindian and Masai princesses.

Dior produces total looks, leather items, underwear, handbags, shoes and accessories.

It is famous for its pagoda skirts, squeezed bustier, "jungle" fantasies, revolutionizing élite haute couture in a pure universal communication code.

During its history Dior icons, items recognized as cult objects by the audience, were "Lady Dior" bag, worn by Princess Diana in 1995, "Saddles" and "Gaucho" bags.

Christian Dior, with its innate, versatile, sophisticated style, with a glance to the future, has always worn celebrities and personalities as Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, the Duchess of Windsor and Evita Peron.

And also Hollywood actresses and pop stars like Madonna and Nicole Kidman.
